In this week’s edition of Minor Happenings, Tony takes a look at the continued strong performance of Double-A Akron lefty Matt Packer and his major league future, provides some comments from Ross Atkins on some players at rookie level Arizona, and some news and insights into players such as Carlos Moncrief, Jose Ramirez, Bryson Myles, Nellie Rodriguez, Matt LaPorta, LeVon Washington and more.
Last week bore witness to another handful of losses for the Lake County Captains as they dropped four of six games at home. The bullpen continues to be problematic for the team and the offense, though productive, continues to lack timing when it comes to big hits. The IBI's Stephanie Metzger recaps the events that took place in Lake County last week.
Professional baseball presents a constant course of inevitable challenges, but Nick Hamilton has overcome adversity since his toddler years. He has overcome a serious hearing issue as a child and is a prospect in the organization that he grew up with and loved, and the same organization his father is the play-by-play announcer for on the radio. The IBI's Stephanie Metzger recently sat down with him and shares his story...
Quad Cities (16-13) scored four times in the sixth inning and defeated the Captains (15-15) by a final of 7-4. Roberto Pena and Brian Blasik walked to begin the sixth and Jordan Scott, who had five RBI’s, singled them both home.
The Lake County Captains (14-14, 36-58) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as they snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits (15-12, 53-43) on Saturday night.
The Cedar Rapids Kernels (19-8, 59-36) used two home runs by right fielder Adam Brett Walker and a complete game from southpaw Brett Lee to defeat the Lake County Captains (13-14, 36-59) 4-1 on Friday night in front of 5,557 fans at Classic Park.
The Cleveland organization got homer-happy Thursday night, as Lake County led the way with four home runs on their own. Well not that Colon, obviously. While Tony is off having fun on vacation, Jim Piascik fills in, analyzing High-A Carolina right-hander Joseph Colon's return from injury and his development, admires and breaks down the progress Double-A outfielder Carlos Moncrief has made in 2013, checks in with Aeros manager Edwin Rodriguez on how a dozen of his players are doing and what changes they are making, and provides insight and information on the likes of Alex Monsalve, Bryson Myles, Dorssys Paulino, Nellie Rodriguez, D'Vone McClure, and more!
Nellie Rodriguez struggled at Lake County early in the season, making it was clear that the organization pushed the first baseman too quickly. After he was moved down to Mahoning Valley, Rodriguez looked better and started to produce, not that anyone could have seen Wednesday night coming. Rodriguez turned in a career performance, and to read all about it and the rest of the action from the minor leagues, join Jim Piascik and go Around The Farm.
The Lake County Captains dropped an extra-inning affair with a 12-inning 7-6 loss against the Cedar Rapids Kernels Wednesday night. Right-hander Dylan Baker (6-5, 3.26) took the bump for the Captains to counter Cedar Rapids’ righty Christian Powell (2-3, 5.68).
Last week wasn’t as glamorous for the Lake County Captains in comparison to others as they went 1-5. Three of their losses were one-run games and it was the bullpen that let the team down in most of the decisions. The IBI's Stephanie Metzger recaps the Captains' week in her weekly notebook.
