In this week's second edition of Minor Happenings, Tony takes a long, hard look at the Triple-A Columbus roster. He takes a look at the hot hitting Tim Fedroff, Ezequiel Carrera and Jared Goedert and provides insight and analysis on whether they are big league options for the Indians anytime soon, provides several interesting comments from Ross Atkins on how they handle players that are affected by trades as well as some thoughts on Vinny Rottino and J.C. Romero, and more.
The Lake County Captains strung together sixteen hits on Wednesday to post a 7-2 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps and extend a five-game winning streak. Left-hander Elvis Araujo took the mound for the Captains against West Michigan righty Marcelo Carreno. Araujo had a tough month of July as he posted a 2-3 record and 6.95 ERA, and he struggled on Wednesday as he had trouble finding the plate.
With the trade deadline now in the past and my vacation but a distant memory, it is time to get back into the swing of things with Minor Happenings as we head down the home stretch of the minor league season. Today, Tony provides updates on the departing Steven Wright and incoming Lars Anderson, the recent impressive performances from lefties T.J. House and Danny Jimenez, all sorts of goodies from Farm Director Ross Atkins on some pitchers in the system, an update on the health of Jeremie Tice, and more.
The Lake County Captains (20-17, 51-55) scored the winning run late in the seventh inning in a 3-2 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps (18-19, 54-53). Lake County won their fourth straight game in the process.
The Lake County Captains (19-17) swept the Dayton Dragons (13-23) out of Classic Park with a convincing 11-2 win on Monday night. Danny Jimenez (1-1, 3.38), making his first start of the season, set the tone for the Captains in five dominating innings.
The Indians organization prides itself on building around guys who bring a winning attitude to the ballpark each day. In the 13th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, the Tribe found itself another one of those players in the form of Arizona State second baseman/outfielder Zach MacPhee. Working through a position change and inconsistent playing time, he has had an interesting season to date, and Mike Zavagno recently sat down with him to discuss it all.
The Lake County Captains snagged their second-straight win from the Dayton Dragons with a 4-3 victory on Sunday afternoon. Left-hander Shawn Morimando (4-3, 3.51) took the wheel for the Captains as he started against Dayton righty Stalin Gerson (5-7, 4.27).
The Lake County Captains (17-17, 48-55) opened a three game series with the Dayton Dragons (13-21, 43-61) on Saturday night. Lake County used an offensive outburst early and avoided a near meltdown to win game one by a final score of 6-5.
Danny Jimenez was an all-star in short season Mahoning Valley in 2011. In 2012, he started the year on the DL after breaking his finger in the first game in spring training. He's back, feeling good, and hoping to return to the form that he showcased last season.
Roberto Hernandez made his return to the United States pitching for the Lake County Captains (16-16) on Thursday night. Behind a solid outing from the artist formerly known as Fausto Carmona, the Captains were able to pull out a 5-3 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps (17-15).

A lot of people think that being a minor league player or coach is a glamorous lifestyle, but that is far from the truth. The reality is that for those with families it requires a strong commitment from all parties involved while they deal with all of the travel, time apart, ever-changing living arrangements, and low pay. Tony recently sat down and talked to the the wives of Lake County coaches Dave Wallace and Jeff Harris to get their side of the minor league lifestyle.
