Smith looks to keep moving up
In the past year since being drafted, rightfielder Jordan Smith has performed at a high level from the moment he first stepped on the field. After a very promising pro debut at short season Single-A Mahoning Valley last year, he is having another good season this year at Low-A Lake County and his value continues to rise.

Mistakes prove costly for Captains in 5-4 loss
A pair of base running blunders proved to be costly for the Lake County Captains as they fell to the Fort Wayne TinCaps 5-4 on Monday. Right-hander Mason Radeke (5-1, 2.96) took the bump for the Captains for the first time against Fort Wayne’s Cody Hebner (6-3, 4.13). Radeke was formerly a starter in the Lake County bullpen this season, though he started last season for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, where he went 2-0 in nine games.

Captains washed out in shortened game, 4-0
The Lake County Captains were washed away by the Fort Wayne TinCaps 4-0 in a six-inning game cut short due to the rain on Sunday. Left-hander Shawn Morimando (2-1, 3.67) took the bump for the Captains after receiving a no decision in his last start in Dayton. From the other dugout, righty Matt Wisler (2-4, 2.74) started for the TinCaps after receiving a loss in his last decision.

Ramirez pounds out five hits in Captains victory
The Lake County Captains used an offensive attack and great pitching to defeat the West Michigan Whitecaps on Saturday night to win the series, 7-4. Second baseman Jose Ramirez paced the Captains with a five-hit attack, and catcher Alex Monsalve blasted his career high sixth home run to lead the Captains to the win.

Captains offense is flat in 4-2 loss
The Lake County Captains (4-4) could not provide a precursor to Friday night’s fireworks at Classic Park. The club continued its offensive struggles, mustering just two runs in a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the West Michigan Whitecaps (4-4).

Minor Happenings: Neal is finally showing his power
In today's week ending edition of Minor Happenings, Tony touches on the power binge that Double-A Akron outfielder Thomas Neal has been on and what that may mean as far as value and a promotion is concerned. Sabourin's heroics lead Captains to walkoff win
An ugly baseball game ended beautifully for first baseman Jerrud Sabourin and the Captains on Thursday night. Sabourin’s walk-off, opposite field three run home run that landed in the left field bleachers propelled Lake County (4-3, second half) to a 9-7 win over West Michigan (4-3).

Dragons sink Captans, 10-3
The Dayton Dragons (1-5, 31-45) used a nine run bottom of the third inning to defeat the Lake County Captains (3-3, 34-41) by a final of 10-3. Dayton sent 13 men to the plate and scored nine times. In the inning Dayton hit for the cycle as a team including two triples, two doubles and a three run homer by the number nine hitter, Yovan Gonzalez.

Late inning rally helps Captains win 5-2
The Lake County Captains (3-2, 34-40) rallied to tie the game in the ninth inning and defeated the Dayton Dragons (0-5, 30-45) in twelve innings 5-2 on Tuesday night. Lefthander Shawn Morimando took the mound for the Captains and right-hander Stalin Gerson started for the Dragons. This was the fourth matchup this year between these two pitchers.

Captains breeze past Dragons, 8-3
The Lake County Captains drained the Dayton Dragons 8-3 on Monday as the Captains’ bats compiled 14 hits and took advantage of a trio of Dayton errors. All-Star Cody Anderson (4-4, 2.99) started for the Captains against Dayton’s Tanner Robles (4-5, 4.56), though Anderson did not pitch deep into the game.

State College schools Mahoning Valley
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers got off to a quick start but failed to capitalize Saturday against the State-College Spikes. Geoffrey Davenport, who made his second start of the season, struggled again. The Scrappers failed to score more than two runs for the fifth straight game as they continue to try to figure out how to score and get on base.

Captains shutout 4-0 after four-run first
The Fort Wayne Tincaps (2-0, 33-39) jumped to a four run lead early on the Lake County Captains (0-2, 31-40) and made it stick for a 4-0 win on Saturday night. Lake County sent lefthander Elvis Araujo (2-6, 4.67) to the mound and the Tincaps greeted him rudely with a four run first inning.

Captains fall in second half opener, 4-3
The Lake County Captains (0-1, 31-39) attempted a late comeback in the first game of the second half but were unsuccessful as the Fort Wayne Tincaps (1-0, 32-39) held on for the win, 4-3. The Captains sent right-hander Felix Sterling (3-6, 5.63) to the mound to begin the second half. He allowed two runs in the first inning.

On-Deck with the Captains: The 2012 All-Star edition
The Lake County Captains are currently in the midst of their four game All Star break. They finished the first half 31-38 and made lots of good strides as a team and as individuals after a tough April. Lianna Holub recaps the first half in her weekly notebook "On-Deck with the Captains". The second half starts up on Friday and the Captains begin 0-0 and will look to get into the postseason!

Minor Happenings: Canzler's tear puts him in ML crosshairs
Today's Minor Happenings is stuffed with lots of updates from Tony on several players up and down the Indians minor league system. He talks about the red hot Russ Canzler and what his play of late may mean for a big league opportunity, the good pitching from Brett Brach, the pro debut of Tyler Naquin, and what is going on with Dillon Howard. He also provides several updates on the walking wounded in the system and updates on some of the things many other players are working on.

Anderson is making big strides
Low-A Lake County All Star right-handed pitcher Cody Anderson made a big impression in the first half. He quickly settled into the starting rotation and pitched well, and now he is working on the finer points of pitching because he is still very new to it. Tony recently sat down with the former 2011 14th round pick and talked about how things are going.
