Memorial Day weekend is upon us, which is a great time to enjoy some good weather, some baseball, and most importantly remember and honor all of the veterans out there. In today’s Happenings, Tony touches on the promotion of Chun Chen and his blistering performance to date and what it could mean for him as a major league option going forward. The rains held off in the minor leagues Wednesday night, not subjecting those games to the wet quagmire the major league team had to slog through. Akron hosted Rehab Wednesday with two major league pitchers on rehab assignments, Carolina had a hard time scoring runs, and Lake County furiously tried to come back from a 9-3 deficit with a five-run ninth. The highlight of Wednesday, though, was a top prospect maybe, just maybe, beginning to break through after a season of struggle. The Captains went 3-4 this past week but the losing record is misleading of the progress the team has made. The team’s offense has started to catch on and even the likes of Claudio Bautista and Dorssys Paulino, who have been miserable at the plate, have started to swing better bats. The Lansing Lugnuts (20-23) took an early lead and withheld a ninth-inning comeback by the Lake County Captains (15-28) to take the Wednesday morning game by a final score of 9-8 at Cooley Law School Stadium. Right-hander Luis DeJesus started his ninth game for the Captains and he opposed righty Ben White, who made his fifth start and tenth appearance for the Lugnuts.

Tuesday's game in Lansing had the Captains and the Lugnuts back and forth for runs throughout nine innings. The Captains started off with a run in the top of the second and the runs continued until the bottom of the eighth, with the Lugnuts driving in four runs to grab the 8-5 victory.

In this week’s first edition of Minor Happenings in the Indians’ farm system, Tony touches on the strides that Cody Anderson is making as a prospect, provides tons of comments from the front office on some of the pitching options at Triple-A Columbus like Danny Salazar, Preston Guilmet, Matt Langwell and Giovanni Soto, and also touches on a few hitters with the return of Tony Wolters to Carolina and the strides he is making as a hitter and catcher and also an in depth look at the promotion of Chun Chen and his future in the organization. Fort Wayne (25-17) defeated Lake County (15-26) by a final of 7-4 on Monday Night in Eastlake, giving the Captains and the TinCaps a split in their four game series.

Routine is one of baseball’s most imperative elements, especially for a pitcher. From workouts to repeating motions within deliveries to maintaining a healthy diet, continuity is key. Saturday's action in the minor leagues was headlined by the performances of a few former blue chippers in the Columbus lineup, along with an assist from a journeyman veteran. Meanwhile in Lake County, a starting pitcher turned in his most dominant start to date, while Akron and Columbus struggled to score enough runs to win. The Lake County Captains put a dent in the Fort Wayne TinCaps’ evening with a 3-2 victory on Saturday night. Lefty Ryan Merritt (1-3, 3.50) received the start for Lake County to counter Fort Wayne righty Ruben Mejia (2-3, 2.70). The Captains raked some early run support for Merritt in the first as shortstop Dorssys Paulino reached on a one-out error and scored on a single off the bat of designated hitter Richard Stock.

It was a full slate of action on Friday night as all of the Indians affiliates were back in action. Ezequiel Carrera chipped in with a good all-around showing in Columbus, Tyler Naquin was an on-base machine in Carolina, Charlie Valerio continued his good season to date and more. The Fort Wayne Tincaps (24-15) scored two runs in the seventh inning and withheld a rally by the Lake County Captains (13-25) to take game one of the series on Friday night in front of 5,847 fans by a final score of 4-3.

After falling to the Lugnuts on Tuesday 7-4 and dominating them 13-4 on Wednesday, the Captains could not close the series with a victory Thursday and fell to the Lugnuts 6-2.

In this week’s week-ending edition of Minor Happenings, Tony provides a bevy of updates on the walking wounded in the Indians system with players such as Alex Monsalve, Chen-Chang Lee, Shawn Armstrong, Joey Wendle and a half a dozen others. The pitching at each of the affiliates left something to be desired, leaving the onus on the offense to make something happen. Wednesday’s day game proved to be victorious for the Captains as they dominated the Lugnuts 13-4 in nine innings at Classic Park. After Tuesday night's 7-4 loss to the Lugnuts, the Captains weren’t going to let a quick turnaround to an 11 a.m. game on Wednesday hold them back.
