After a horrible first road trip of the season, the Carolina Mudcats did something they had not done in five games: win. The Mudcats jumped out to an early lead and held on for a 5-1 win in the first game of a four game series against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Thursday night. Mudcats manager David Wallace said it was a big win for the Mudcats coming off of a five-game losing streak.

Today’s Happenings focus in on the hot start of High-A Carolina second baseman Joey Wendle and Triple-A Columbus right-handed pitcher Fernando Nieve. How much is Wendle rising up the prospect ranks? The Akron Aeros headlined the action down on the farm last night, as Tyler Holt, Giovanny Urshela, Jesus Aguilar, and friends headed an offensive charge that led to 10 runs and a win. The Lake County Captains also won, somehow scoring seven runs on five hits (only one of which went for extra bases). Columbus and Carolina lost thanks to some suspect pitching, but there were still encouraging performances to enjoy. On Wednesday, the Carolina Mudcats dropped their season-high fifth straight game and were swept by the Wilmington Blue Rocks by a score of 6-2. The Mudcats struggled to get anything going offensively all day, ending the road trip 1-5 and 5-7 overall. Mudcats starting pitcher Jacob Lee was handed his first loss of the season. The Mudcats are still having trouble hitting with runners in scoring position, going 2-for-7 on Wednesday.

Wilmington, D.E. – The Wilmington Blue Rocks clinched a series victory with a 4-3 win over the Carolina Mudcats Tuesday night at Frawley Stadium. Left-handed pitcher J.D. Reichback (0-1) took the loss for Carolina and allowed two runs on five hits over two innings.

Winston Salem, N.C. -- The Carolina Mudcats were unable to follow up on their series sweep of the Winston Salem Dash from a week earlier, and fell 4-1 to the Dash on Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark. Squandered opportunities played a key role in the loss as the Mudcats stranded 10 base runners and were 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

For the first time in a while, there were no rainouts on the farm and every team was in action. The return to action was not pretty for everyone, as Daisuke Matsuzaka and the Lake County defense struggled mightily. Much like they did in the opening game of the season, the Carolina Mudcats pulled out a 9-7 win against the Winston Salem Dash in their first road game of the season on Friday night. First baseman Jerrud Sabourin went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, leading the Mudcats to victory.

The Carolina Mudcats struck back at the series-winning Wilmington Blue Rocks, demolishing them with a 12-1 score Wednesday afternoon at Five County Stadium. Right-handed pitcher Cody Anderson (2-0) got the win for the Mudcats, pitching five innings and holding the Blue Rocks scoreless for three innings, with a three up three down inning in the second.

Sam Selman and the Wilmington Blue Rocks’ bullpen held the Carolina Mudcats to one hit over eight innings to aide their team in pulling away for a 5-1 victory on Tuesday night at Five County Stadium. The win clinched the series for Wilmington (3-2), and the Mudcats fell to 3-2 on the year.
