Minor Happenings: Brown, Rodriguez have big turnarounds
In today’s edition of Minor Happenings, the IBI's Tony Lastoria takes a look at the tremendous second half from Low-A Lake County right-handed pitcher Mitch Brown and first baseman Nellie Rodriguez. They were the big keys to the team’s second half turnaround, and he looks into their improvement not only in their performance but as prospects as well. Nick Maronde became the latest player to trade his halo for a block "C" or vice-versa this season as the Indians and Angels have now had multiple personnel change squads this year, including Joe Smith, Vinnie Pestano and, most recently, J.B. Around the Farm: September 3, 2014
The playoffs started Wednesday night for the Columbus Clippers, Akron RubberDucks, and Lake County Captains, with two of the three teams ending the night with a win. Though it was obviously more than a one-person effort, the Clippers and Captains used big nights from an outfielder to find victory (James Ramsey and Clint Frazier, respectively), while Duke von Schamann did his best for the RubberDucks in a loss. An 11th inning RBI double by Richmond’s Angel Villalona proved to be the difference-maker in Akron’s playoff opener at Canal Park Wednesday night as the Flying Squirrels captured a 3-2 win over the RubberDucks.

Playoff-bound RubberDucks lose to SeaWolves, 6-4
Erie’s Jason Krizan stroked a two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning Sunday, giving the SeaWolves the lead for good in a 6-4 win over the Akron RubberDucks at Canal Park. Krizan’s triple off Akron starter Shawn Morimando (2-6) landed just inside the first base bag and rolled to the right-field corner, chasing a pair of runners home and giving the SeaWolves a 5-4 lead. Krizan, 3-3, with two singles, two walks and two steals to go along with his triple, later scored on a single by Corey Jones to make it 6-4.

Despite loss, RubberDucks clinch playoff berth
The word starting spreading through the Akron dugout during the ninth inning of Saturday’s game against Erie at Canal Park, and the news was exactly what the players wanted to hear. The Altoona Curve had posted a 3-1, 10-inning victory over the Bowie Baysox, which clinched an Eastern League playoff spot for the RubberDucks.

SeaWolves leave Ducks feeling green in defeat
The Akron RubberDucks entered Friday’s series opener with a chance to clinch an Eastern League playoff spot with a win, but it was the Erie SeaWolves who played as if the playoffs were on the line by bashing Akron’s bullpen on the way to a 14-4 victory at Canal Park in front of a sold out crowd of 8,109.
