Over the course of the next few weeks Tony will be posting post-draft pieces on all of the players that the Indians drafted and signed from the 2013 Draft. The Indians signed 25 players in total and also signed two undrafted free agents, and he will have a tons of comments on each and every player from Indians Amateur Scouting Director Brad Grant as well as other insights from what was seen in their pro debuts this season. In today's first edition he looks at Clint Frazier, Thomas Pannone, Silento Sayles, Matt Whiteside and Shawn Rowland.
The competitive balance lottery happened on Wednesday to no fanfare at all, but Indians fans should really be happy about it and need to know about it. The reason is simple: this pick becomes a big trade asset for the Indians. It could be the centerpiece in a trade, especially if it's for pen help. The IBI's Jeff Ellis explains the value of the pick and how fortunate the Indians were to get it.
The Cleveland Indians have signed 11th round draft pick right-handed pitcher Adam Plutko. With his signing they have now signed 25 of their 39 draft picks. The deadline is just two days away and Tony talks about who the Indians may still have their sights on and provides an update on the status of the unsigned picks.
The 2013 Draft is long over now, and most players who are going to sign have done so. This year, IBI draft guru Jeff Ellis thought it might be fun to cap off the draft coverage here at the IBI with an Indians shadow draft. A shadow draft is exactly what you think it is: Jeff gets to put on my GM cap and make every single pick. Take a look at who he picks and compare his picks to what the Indians did.
The 2013 MLB Draft signing deadline on July 12th is fast approaching. The Indians have signed all of the bonus pool picks that there are going to sign and are $332,100 under budget which means they have some money they can use for post-10th round picks and not be at risk of being severely taxed or lose a first round pick. Here is an update on some of the post-10th round picks who the Indians have talked to and may be talking to.
About a week after the draft, the IBI's Jeff Ellis was able to do an interview with former Buckeye and now Chicago White Sox minor league pitcher Bradley Goldberg. Here is their entire conversation transcribed and it provides a chance to get some insights on the draft process and the Ohio State baseball program.
The Indians have done their major lifting with signing picks from the draft as they have signed all of their picks through the ninth round and have signed 21 of the 39 players they selected in the draft. But they are still busy trying to sign a few more players, and today we provide an update on one new signing.
Every year after the draft IBI draft guru Jeff Ellis does a tools piece, and every year it doesn't really generate much interest. As a writer it seemed time for him to change it up a bit and shake up how he goes about this article. He wanted to make it more fun and give some awards and predictions, and he shares all of that in his latest.
We are now officially down to three weeks away from the July 12th signing deadline, and the Indians have 16 players officially signed with a few more coming before the deadline. It is shaping up to be a busy weekend for the Indians as several draft picks are expected to officially sign. At least three players are expected to sign on Friday or sometime this weekend, including some big names. But one high profile player has decided not to sign, which comes as a big surprise. Tony has the details...
Yesterday, Tony posted part one of his post-draft Q&A with Indians Director of Scouting John Mirabelli. Today, in part two, Mirabelli goes into depth about their preparation for the draft, the philosophy of the draft, how they manage their bonus pool money, the decision-making process that goes into the first round pick (and other picks), the negotiation process, and much more. This is a very detailed and insightful Q&A on the pre and post draft process.
The signings have slowed down and the news has all but disappeared this week as remaining unsigned players either stand strong on their commitments to going to or going back to college while others are weighing their options. We are still 23 days away from the July 12th signing deadline and the Indians have only signed 14 players, so roughly 8-12 more players will be signed between now and then. Tony gives an update on a few that could be next as a few high profile signings should come soon, and one is in town as we speak.
We are already almost two weeks removed from the draft and with that lots of new players are coming into the organization and a few are already making their professional debuts this week. Tony had a chance over the weekend to sit down at length with Indians Director of Scouting John Mirabelli and talk about the Indians draft. Mirabelli discussed the strength of the draft and trends we saw in it this year, the decision-making process, why he liked Clint Frazier so much, and lots more. Part 2 will post later in the week.
