The Carolina Mudcats held the Myrtle Beach Pelicans without a run for eight total innings, but gave up five in the fourth on their way to a 5-1 loss. The Mudcats were ahead after a run in the top of the third before David Lyon sparked the Myrtle Beach win with a two-out, three-run home run. Dylan Baker gave up all five runs in the loss while D.J. Brown pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief.

A two-run fourth inning carried the Hillcats to the series win as Lynchburg overcame a two-RBI performance from Joe Sever in Carolina’s final game of the season at Calvin Falwell Field.

The Mudcats were held to just four hits in the defeat due largely to a phenomenal start from Winston-Salem’s Terance Marin (2-0, 2.37). Marin allowed just two hits and one walk in 8.0 shutout innings while striking out four.

Merritt earned his league-leading eighth win of the season in a commanding 7.1 inning start in which allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits. The lefty didn’t issue a walk and struck out five as he helped the Mudcats snap a four-game losing skid.
