Orel Hershiser: From Pitching to Poker
Many Indians fans will remember Orel Hershiser, a pitcher who made a name for himself with the Dodgers and moved on to signing with the Cleveland Indians in 1995. Indians General Manager John Hart had said that he was looking for someone who had the “character and competitiveness” to show younger players how to play the right way, and Hershiser proved to be the right choice. After his playing career ended he moved to the broadcast booth, but he has since become a professional poker player.

Indians top prospects continue to develop

Cougars blank Captains 6-0, take commanding 2-0 series lead
The Kane County Cougars shutout the Captains 6-0 on Thursday night to take a commanding 2-0 series lead in the best of five series. The series will shift to Lake County on Saturday where the Captains will look to extend the series.

RubberDucks bow out of playoffs with 5-1 loss
Richmond’s Devin Harris clubbed a two-run homer in the fourth inning Saturday night, sparking the Flying Squirrels to a 5-1, series-clinching victory over the Akron RubberDucks in Game 4 of the Western Division playoffs at The Diamond.

Birch hurls gem, Richmond pitching silences Akron
Three Richmond pitchers, led by lefty starter Ty Blach, weaved a three-hit shutout Friday night, as the Flying Squirrels edged the Akron RubberDucks, 1-0, in game three of the EL Western Division playoffs at The Diamond.

Right-hander Will Roberts set a new career-high with 11 strikeouts, and led theAkron RubberDucks to a 5-1 victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels in game two of the Eastern League Western Division Series Thursday night at Canal Park.

RubberDucks show late fight, but fall in extras 3-2
An 11th inning RBI double by Richmond’s Angel Villalona proved to be the difference-maker in Akron’s playoff opener at Canal Park Wednesday night as the Flying Squirrels captured a 3-2 win over the RubberDucks.

The Scrappers were limited to just three hits in game one of their doubleheader and lost 3-2 on a walk off homerun. In game two, the Scrappers came out and scored twelve runs in the first 4 innings on their way to a 12-3 win to wrap up the season.

Dean Green’s two-run homer in the sixth inning off Cole Sulser lifted the Erie SeaWolves to a 4-2 victory, and completeda four-game series sweep over the RubberDucks on Fan Appreciation Day at Canal Park.

Playoff-bound RubberDucks lose to SeaWolves, 6-4
Erie’s Jason Krizan stroked a two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning Sunday, giving the SeaWolves the lead for good in a 6-4 win over the Akron RubberDucks at Canal Park. Krizan’s triple off Akron starter Shawn Morimando (2-6) landed just inside the first base bag and rolled to the right-field corner, chasing a pair of runners home and giving the SeaWolves a 5-4 lead. Krizan, 3-3, with two singles, two walks and two steals to go along with his triple, later scored on a single by Corey Jones to make it 6-4.

Despite loss, RubberDucks clinch playoff berth
The word starting spreading through the Akron dugout during the ninth inning of Saturday’s game against Erie at Canal Park, and the news was exactly what the players wanted to hear. The Altoona Curve had posted a 3-1, 10-inning victory over the Bowie Baysox, which clinched an Eastern League playoff spot for the RubberDucks.

Scrappers top Doubledays 5-2 to start final home series
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are making the best of their final home stand of the season. After splitting two games with Jamestown last night, the Scrappers jumped out early on their way to a 5-2 win over the Auburn Doubledays.

SeaWolves leave Ducks feeling green in defeat
The Akron RubberDucks entered Friday’s series opener with a chance to clinch an Eastern League playoff spot with a win, but it was the Erie SeaWolves who played as if the playoffs were on the line by bashing Akron’s bullpen on the way to a 14-4 victory at Canal Park in front of a sold out crowd of 8,109.

Lake County Captains outlast Great Lakes, 6-5
Grant Fink singled home Nellie Rodriguez in the top of the tenth inning and the Captains beat the Great Lakes Loons 6-5 on Thursday Night. The Captains are now 10-7 in extra innings and the Loons fall to 7-13 in extras. The Captains have won eight straight series.

Mahoning Valley Scrappers edged by Jamestown, 2-1
One night after an offensive explosion that resulted in the Mahoning Valley Scrappers getting a walk off win, it was a pitcher’s duel at Eastwood Field. The Scrappers were only able to manage five hits while falling to the Jamestown Jammers 2-1. The Jammers struck first when they put a run on the board in the top of 3rd inning.

Akron RubberDucks snap skid with 11-3 win against Trenton
The RubberDucks entered Thursday’s game against Trenton looking to avoid a four- game sweep, snap a six-game losing streak and zero in further on an EL playoff berth. After scoring 11 runs on 15 hits in an 11-3 victory over the Thunder at Canal Park, they managed to do all three.
