Two Clippers that have been a major reason for Columbus' success at the plate this season were responsible for another victory Friday night. Behind the bats of Cord Phelps and Russ Canzler, the Clippers defeated the Durham Bulls, 4-3. Columbus won for the second night in a row after beating the Bulls, 7-1, Thursday. With the win, Columbus splits its four-game set against Durham.

Another week is in the boos for the Indians' Triple-A affiliate the Columbus Clippers, and they are still hanging around in the International League wildcard race. Andrew Holleran is here once again like he is every Monday with his notebook "Sailing with the Clippers" to recap the week that was for the Clippers.

Columbus fell to the Indianapolis Indians, 4-0, in game two of its series against the International League West Division leaders. The Clippers won the series opener and first game of the home stand, 5-1, on Friday night. Columbus has five more games on its seven-game stand at Huntington Park.

The Columbus Clippers returned home to Huntington Park Friday night after a lengthy road trip and started off their home stand with a win. Columbus defeated the Indianapolis Indians, 5-1, to open a four-game set against the International League’s best team.

The Clippers struggled at the plate for the fourth-straight game Tuesday, but behind a solid effort on the mound and some clutch hitting, Columbus scathed by the Bulls on way to a victory. Columbus beat Durham, 2-1, in extra innings, to take game two of the four game series in North Carolina.

Poor weather caused the game between Columbus and Durham to get called early, but the Clippers weren’t playing well enough to win or mount a comeback anyway. Columbus fell to the Durham Bulls, 4-1, in North Carolina in a shortened seven-inning contest that had three rain delays.

After ending the last full week of July on a tear, the Clippers limped into August and didn’t get much better as the first week of the month went on. Columbus went 13-3 the last two full weeks of July, the hottest the team has been all season long. The Clippers then took a turn for the worse this week, going 2-4. The Clippers got back in the win column Friday night, and they did it without much of an offense. After scoring 77 runs last week, Columbus started this week losing its first three games and extending its losing streak to four. The streak stopped Friday, but it wasn’t due to the Clippers production at the plate. Behind seven-shutout innings thrown by right-hander Jeanmar Gomez, the Clippers beat the Norfolk Tides, 1-0, in Southern Virginia.

What a difference a week has made for the Columbus Clippers. After posting a 6-1 record last week—which included part of a season-high six-game winning streak—Columbus has taken to the losing side this week. The Clippers lost their fourth-straight game Thursday night in Norfolk, falling to the Tides in game one of a four-game set in southern Virginia.

Triple-A Columbus is on fire and have gone 12-3 in their last 15 games scoring tons of runs in the process, and suddenly are back in the thick of the International League playoff race looking to defend their consecutive league titles. The International League’s leader in runs per game played like it Sunday night, but the Clippers’ pitching staff faltered, and Columbus lost for the first time since Wednesday. The Clippers were riding a five-game winning streak heading into their Sunday contest against the Rochester Red Wings, and looked the part of a six-in-a-row club through three innings.

Prior to the All-Star break, Ezequiel Carrera was hitting .258 and the Clippers were 45-45. Post All-Star break, the Clippers center fielder is hitting .467 and Columbus is 58-50. Saturday night, Carrera was yet again a big part in a Columbus victory, as the Clippers surged past the Rochester Red Wings for the fourth-straight night, 8-5.

Offense has certainly not been lacking at the plate for the Clippers over the past two games, and Columbus has two easy wins to show for it. Columbus defeated the Toledo Mud Hens Friday night, 13-2. Thursday night, the Clippers throttled the Mud Hens, 16-2. Over the past two nights at Huntington Park, Columbus has tallied 37 hits--a franchise record for a two-game span.

Chris Seddon has been a force on the mound for the Columbus Clippers over the past two months, and is looking like he could be a big league option at some point this season. With rosters set to expand in about five weeks, Seddon's versatile left-handed arm could put him in the mix for a callup to the big league team in September if he finishes the season strong.

After their season-high six-game winning streak came to an end last night, the Clippers started a new one Thursday night. Columbus rolled past Toledo, 16-2, following a split double header last night in which the Clippers lost game one before tallying an 11-10 walk-off win in game two.

The streak is over, but the Clippers were able to salvage one of the two games they played against the Toledo Mud Hens Wednesday night. Columbus won game two of the double header, 11-10, after their six-game winning streak ended in game one following a 5-3 defeat.
