Captains Notebook: Vick's struggles continue at Lake County
The Lake County Captains had a brief 3-1 week as the first half of the season came to a close. Overall, the first half has been tough for the squad as they post a league-worst 27-43 record and sit 14 games out of first place in the Eastern Division. Despite some severe offensive struggles, the team has boasted some bright spots, including a solid first half from pitcher Robbie Aviles and a breakout performance from infielder Paul Hendrix. Stephanie Metzger recaps the past week went for the Captains, who will regroup to begin the second half of the season June 19.

Captains pitching tames Dragons, 5-1
The Lake County Captains (27-42) tamed the Dayton Dragons (35-32) with a 5-1 victory behind a solid pitching performance. Lefty Luis Lugo (4-4,4.56) countered Dayton right-hander Sal Romano (4-5, 3.42) for the start. Lugo, who had a rough start to his season, was coming off a trio of impressive previous starts. That remained the case on Saturday.

Captains Notebook: Brown is starting to come around
The Lake County Captains (24-42) split a 4-4 week, including a sweep of a rain makeup double-header June 5. The team managed to keep most games tight, except for June 6, which resulted in a 14-4 blowout loss. The team remains the worst-hitting squad in the league and the pitching sits among the bottom half of the Midwest League, but they're finding small ways to win. As expectations abound, Frazier's focus is to just be himself

He is working through his first full season and managing all of the expectations that come when you are a first round pick, but through it all he is just focusing on being himself. Perhaps it was the warm weather, or perhaps things are just starting to click, but last week seemed to be a nice improvement for the Lake County Captains. The team went 5-2, stringing together a three-game win streak the past three days. The bullpen has offered some nice outings and the offense has collectively picked itself up. Stokes hopeful improved fastball leads to opportunity
Since last season, Jimmy Stokes has picked up some velocity on his fastball. He also picked up a college diploma. The tall right-handed pitcher is currently in Arizona out in extended spring training and the IBI's Stephanie Metzger recently caught up with him to see how things are going and how his new throwing program is coming along.

Lake County Captains deflate West Michigan Whitecaps, 5-2
The Lake County Captains (13-29) deflated the sails of the West Michigan Whitecaps (24-18) in a 5-2 win May 17. Dace Kime (0-6, 7.82) received the start for the Captains opposite Whitecaps’ righty Jonathon Crawford (1-1, 2.73). Both squads went scoreless through the first two innings until the Captains struck first. Centerfielder Clint Frazier led off the inning with a walk and reached third on a single by shortstop Paul Hendrix. With one out, designated Anthony Santander singled to right to plate Frazier, giving the Captains the early 1-0 lead.

Confident Aviles is making strides in Lake County
It’s been four years since Robbie Aviles was drafted, but his confidence is at an all-time high. He suffered an elbow injury right before the 2010 draft, and now with a repaired elbow he is set out to repair his status as a prospect arm. The IBI's Stephanie Metzger recently sat down with the talented righty to talk about his success so far this season and maintaining it.

Captains Notebook: Rodriguez is slowly coming around
The Lake County Captains picked up a pair of wins last week before the team was plagued by a four-game losing skid. The pitching staff struggled, despite the offense's attempts to produce more runs, except for a shutout May 13. Now posting an 11-28 overall record, the Captains sit in the bottom of the Midwest League standings, 12 games out of first place. Captains fall to Hot Rods, 6-3
The Lake County Captains couldn’t maintain a one-run lead over the Bowling Green Hot Rods as they fell 6-3. Right-hander Robbie Aviles (0-1, 1.47) crafted another solid start for the Captains opposite Bowling Green lefty Blake Snell (2-2, 2.54), who punched out nine hitters through six innings.

On-Deck with the Captains: Hendrix takes over as shortstop
The Lake County Captains had an interesting week that consisted of an 18-inning game, position players pitching and the departure of Dorssys Paulino. Now 9-24, the team remains in the basement of the Midwest League. One player who isn't struggling is shortstop Paul Hendrix, who will look for more playing time with Paulino gone. Lake County Catains extend losing streak, fall 6-4 to South Bend
The Lake County Captains lost their eighth straight game by a score of 6-4 against the South Bend Silver Hawks. Dace Kime got the start, but lasted less than five innings as his ERA moved up to 9.95 for the season. The Captains made a comeback attempt, but it wasn't enough to catch South Bend on the road.

The arrival of first-rounder Clint Frazier highlighted the Captains’ week, though the team’s winning woes remained. They posted a 1-5 record last week as they managed to avoid a home sweep by the Burlington Bees, but their trip up north to Lansing, Mich. didn’t end well.
