Around the Farm: November 13, 2014

Join Jim Piascik as he writes about Perez being at it again last night in Puerto Rico, Giovanny Urshela’s continued excellence, and much more as he takes you Around the Farm.

Around the Farm: November 12, 2014
Right now, it seems there is nothing Giovanny Urshela cannot do. The third baseman may not have the first round pedigree or a massive signing bonus that typically gets national attention for a prospect, but Urshela continues to prove his worth on the field. Join Jim Piascik as he recaps another big night for Urshela in Venezuela as well as the rest of the action from across the globe as he takes you Around the Farm.

Evaluating the opposition: The 2015 Chicago White Sox

Join Jim Piascik as he breaks down the combination of internal growth and offseason acquisitions that could help the White Sox make a playoff push in 2015 and make the AL Central even more crowded.

Around the Farm: October 30, 2014
The final two offseason leagues -- the Puerto Rican Winter League and the Australian Winter League -- both began play on Thursday, marking the first time every offseason league was in action this season. Cleveland had a couple prospects in action, but as he has all year, third baseman Giovanny Urshela stole the show. Join Jim Piascik as he recaps Urshela’s sustained dominance and the rest of the action from across the globe as he takes you Around the Farm.

Around the Farm: October 29, 2014
Oh, the many fun things that can happen over small sample sizes. If we did not know any better, Jesus Aguilar’s 1-for-10 skid to start his time in the Venezuelan Winter League would be a concern. But after knocking a home run, a triple, and a single Monday night, Aguilar continued to show things are alright on Wednesday. Join Jim Piascik as he recaps Aguilar’s night and the rest of the action from across the globe as he takes you Around the Farm.

Picking up Aviles’ option goes beyond the numbers
Strictly based on the numbers, Cleveland exercising utility man Mike Aviles’ $3.5 million option for 2015 makes no sense. Going beyond the surface numbers, however, shows why the move is defensible. Join Jim Piascik as he breaks down Aviles’ hidden value to the organization and why picking up his option makes more sense than it appears on first glance.

Sometimes the significance of a performance goes beyond the numbers in the box score. That was the case for Yoiber Marquina Wednesday, as the 18-year-old made his offseason debut in Venezuela. While the inning he pitched was not clean, his presence on the mound itself means something. Join Jim Piascik as he breaks down Marquina’s appearance and the rest of the action from across the globe as he takes you Around the Farm.

Evaluating the opposition: The 2015 Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers were eliminated from the playoffs for the fourth straight year without a championship, as one of the clearest teams in win-now mode fell short yet again. Now, with Max Scherzer and Victor Martinez headed for free agency and the Kansas City Royals playing deep into the playoffs, there seems to be a train of thought emerging that the Tigers' window is closing. Such an event would be welcome news for Cleveland, but Jim Piascik does not think it is true. Join Jim to find out why after the jump.
