Launching off with the Aeros: 8/20/13 – 8/26/13
The Akron Aeros had a decent week -- winning four of their seven games -- though it was not enough to get them back into the playoff picture. One more loss (or an Erie SeaWolves win) eliminates the reigning Eastern League champions, though things are not all bad. Akron's bullpen dominated, as did two early-season heroes who had slumped of late. To find out who they are and everything you need to know from the past week, join Jim Piascik and go Launching off with the Aeros.

B-Mets strike early and often, defeat Aeros 10-2
The Binghamton Mets scored early on Brett Myers and never let up, beating the Akron Aeros 10-2 Saturday night at Canal Park. Myers -- who started for the Aeros (63-69) on a major league rehab assignment -- did not look good.

Around The Farm: August 22, 2013
Even though Danny Salazar has come up to the major leagues and gotten results, the organization has not done the best job of developing starting pitching in recent years. There are a few pitchers making waves now, but long-term success will rely on more than one or two arms. Joseph Colon is one of those guys Cleveland needs to develop in order to have more starting depth and he showed what he is capable of Thursday. To read all about Colon's night and everything else you need to know about the minor leagues, join Jim Piascik as he takes you Around The Farm.

Sloppy defense allows Aeros past B-Mets 7-3
The Binghamton Mets came into Akron Thursday night fresh off of clinching the Eastern Division. Not that the Akron Aeros cared. The Aeros (62-68) defeated the B-Mets (81-50) by a score of 7-3 thanks to four Binghamton errors and a four-run first inning.

Around The Farm: August 21, 2013
The ups and downs of a long baseball season can affect even the best players. There was a point when Carolina second baseman Joe Wendle and Lake County right-hander Dylan Baker were red-hot, yet of late, the pair had struggled. That was not the case Wednesday night as both broke out in big ways. To read about their night and everything you need to know about Wednesday in the minor leagues, join Jim Piascik as he takes you Around The Farm.

The evolution of Chris Perez
To most fans, right-hander Chris Perez is a hothead with a loud mouth who needs to learn how to shut up. While that may be true, what is going unseen is the evolution of Perez. Despite all of the off-the-field drama, there is a lot more to “Pure Rage” Perez than a grip-and-rip approach. Fans may view him as an idiot, but the truth is that Perez has constantly tweaked and adjusted his pitching style in order to be effective. Join Jim Piascik as he breaks down the evolution of Chris Perez.

Launching off with the Aeros: 8/13/13 – 8/19/13
The Akron Aeros were above .500 in a week for the first time since mid-July, winning four of their seven games as they moved their record to 60-67. The winning still leaves Akron seven games out of first place and the wild card, though with a young team, the growth shown by the Aeros throughout the season is a win on its own. To read about Tyler Naquin's first week, Jesus Aguilar setting records, and everything else you need to know, join Jim Piascik and go Launching off with the Aeros.

Yan Gomes' thoroughly unexpected season
There is no doubt that Yan Gomes has come out of nowhere to be one of the best players on the team. The big question is whether or not Gomes can sustain it going forward. So far in baseball history, there has not been anyone quite like Gomes, but that does not mean he cannot sustain this success. Jim Piascik analyzes Gomes' performance to date, why it is so unique, and takes a look at some possible outcomes going forward.

Around The Farm: August 15, 2013
Is there anything better than seeing a top prospect take his team to victory? Sure, Lake County would not have won 1-0 without a shutout pitching performance, but Dorssys Paulino's solo home run provided all the offense the Captains needed. Paulino has continued to turn things around following his rough start and he sustained that constant progress Thursday night. To read about Paulino and everything else you need to know about the night in the minor leagues, join Jim Piascik as he goes Around The Farm.

Considering that Carlos Santana, Yan Gomes, and Lou Marson were all not developed in the organization, it is great to see catchers like Jake Lowery and Alex Lavisky performing like they did Wednesday night. The catching depth looks good in the minors and Lowery and Lavisky are a part of that. To read about what made their performances noteworthy and everything else you need to know about Wednesday night in the minor leagues, join Jim Piascik as he takes you Around The Farm.

Launching off with the Aeros: 8/6/13 – 8/12/13
Needing a winning streak to get back into the Eastern League playoff race, the Akron Aeros went the other way, losing four of six games and falling to 56-64. That mark leaves the Aeros 8.5 games out of first place and 7.5 games out of the wild card. To read about the Aeros debut of a 2013 draft pick, the two catchers making waves, and everything else you need to know from the past week, join Jim Piascik and go Launching off with the Aeros.

Declining plate discipline is sinking Cabrera in 2013
The question of why Asdrubal Cabrera is still hitting cleanup is a hot one amongst Cleveland fans. Batting in that spot would have been a perfectly good one two years ago when the shortstop hit 25 home runs, or even last year when Cabrera's home runs dipped to 16 but his wRC+ stayed solid at 113. This year, however, Cabrera looks more like a replacement-level player than an All-Star. What happened, you ask? As Jim Piascik explains, Cabrera's plate discipline has just disappeared.

Both Daisuke Matsuzaka and Bryson Myles missed the entire month of May as injuries took their toll on the pair's effectiveness. Now that both are healthy, Matsuzaka and Myles are performing well and making waves and Thursday night was no different. To find out all about Matsuzaka and Myles' nights and everything you need to know about Thursday in the minor leagues, join Jim Piascik as he takes you Around The Farm.

After yet another depressing loss at the major league level, why not take some time to focus on the happiness and promise of the minor leagues? Why not bask in the insane success of Trevor Frank in the Mahoning Valley bullpen or the way that a finally healthy Alex Monsalve is producing at Akron? Leave all your Tiger trouble behind and join Jim Piascik as he recaps all you need to know about Wednesday night in the minor leagues and goes Around The Farm.

Launching off with the Aeros: 7/30/13 – 8/5/13
The Akron Aeros won on Saturday and Sunday, but it was not enough to undo their four-game losing streak to start the week. Losing four of six games dropped the Aeros to a 55-59 record, 5.5 games behind the Harrisburg Senators for first place in the Western Division and five games behind the Erie SeaWolves for the wild card. To find out what it means for the Aeros' playoff chances, join Jim Piascik and go Launching off with the Aeros.

Around The Farm: August 1, 2013
So often, the difference between a prospect developing into a major leaguer or busting out in the minors is health. Some players are just unlucky with their bodies and see their careers end while others manage to stay on the field and make something happen. Bryson Myles is turning heads now that he is healthy and he continued to do so Thursday night. To read about Myles and everything else you need to know about the minor leagues, join Jim Piascik and go Around The Farm.
