Here are the final stats from the just completed Fall Instructional League out in Goodyear, Arizona. The Indians once again shuffled a lot of players in and out of the lineup and on and off the mound over the four week period. While the data sample is small, there are always a few things you can take away from these performances. The stats in this posting are all inclusive of everyone that played in Instructs....27 pitchers and 32 position players!
A lot of Indians were in action once again on Thursday night in the Arizona Fall League and Venezuela Winter League. Jesus Aguilar came down to Earth at the plate, Ezequiel Carrera had a strong game, Will Roberts started and had a typical outing for him, and others got in and played as well.
Another year of the Fall Instructional League came to pass on Monday as the Indians put the wraps on the 2013 development season with an eye toward a busy offseason in anticipation for 2014. In some ways Instructional league is not considered the end of the season, but rather the beginning of the next one. The IBI's Tony Lastoria was out in Arizona recently and shares a ton of insights into pitchers like Carlos Melo, Kyle Crockett and Jodan Milbrath who really impressed this fall. He also gives updates on several other pitchers and has injury and rehab updates on close to a dozen players.
On Thursday afternoon the Cleveland Indians announced that they have re-signed right-handed releiver Matt Capps to a minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to major league spring training camp.
Both the Arizona Fall League and Venezuela Winter League were back in action on Tuesday night. The good performances continue to show as Jesus Aguilar is in the zone and Tyler Naquin put forth another good game. Also, others like Ezequiel Carrera and Jose Flores were in action.
The Cleveland Indians today announced center fielder Michael Bourn underwent minor surgery on his left hamstring in Dallas, TX by Dr. Dan Cooper. He originally suffered the injury on a second base steal attempt in the ninth inning of the final game of the regular season
This game was the second of three against the NC Dinos (Changwon) of Korea Professional Baseball, and once again the young, inexperienced Indians hitters had fits against the Korean pitchers as they were shutout and limited to one hit. There were some impressive showings on the mound from the likes of Jacob Lee, Sean Brady and others, and Tony reviews all the numbers from the game and provides some insight into how players are doing and also potential destinations for next season.
On October 6th of last year the Indians hired Terry Francona to be their manager and thus began the start of an amazing revival for an organization on life support to one that is heading in the right direction. They had a good year, but now comes the hard part. Tony talks about their philosophy change and how they need to take the next step this offseason, how Francona had such a big effect on the team, and why he thinks the Indians need to pull out all the stops to resign Jimenez and Kazmir.
The Indians played the first of three scheduled games against the NC Dinos (Changwon) of the Korea Professional Baseball. Things did not go so well for the young Tribe as they were shut down by a score of 8-1, a score indicative of a young team facing unique arm slot pitchers for the first time. Tony was there and provides the full stats for all of the players that played in the game and insight into how each player looked.
Here is a current listing of players from the Indians’ organization expected to play winter ball this offseason. This is not a complete list as it will undoubtedly change over the course of winter ball as players finish up play and other players end up being assigned to a league.
The Arizona Fall League and Venezuela Winter League action continued on Friday, and even the Mexican Winter League kicked off though there were no Indians playing. The Indians faced off against a MLB affiliate for the final time in Instructional League on Wednesday thumping the Royals 12-2 and now get ready for a three game set against the NC Dinos from Korea to finish out the schedule. The Indians had three players in action in the Arizona Fall League on Wednesday, and the IBI's Tony Lastoria learned something new as the Indians had players on BOTH teams in the AFL matchup. The Arizona Fall League kicked off on Tuesday afternoon in the desert sun out in Phoenix, and four Indians prospects were in action as Tyler Naquin and Joe Wendle got the start and Shawn Armstrong and Trey Haley came on in relief to close the game late. Instructional League action continued in Arizona on Monday as the Indians took on the Dodgers at the Goodyear facility and the game ended in a 2-2 tie. The game featured another dominating performance by lefty Elvis Araujo who has been sensational this fall. The IBI's Tony Lastoria talks about that and also shares all of the stats from the game and provides up-to-date fall stats for all of the players that participated in the game.
