The Indians have activated right-handed closer Chris Perez from the 15-day disabled list and optioned left-handed pitcher T.J. House to Columbus. House did not appear in a game since being called up on Monday.
The Indians had a busy night on the farm as everyone was in action, although Columbus was suspended after three innings because of rain. Wonderkid Clint Frazier was back in the lineup on Wednesday after his multi-hit debut on Tuesday, and Joey Wendle continues to hit well at Carolina. Tony shares thoughts on both of them and more in ATF....
In today’s second edition of Minor Happenings for the week, Tony takes a look at the emergence of two high profile pitching prospects in Mahoning Valley with Caleb Hamrick and Luis Lugo. He also provides several comments from the front office on players at High-A Carolina, the strides that Ronny Rodriguez continues to make, the prospect standing of Jerrud Sabourin, the injury concerns of Matt LaPorta, the inconsistency that Luis DeJesus is working through, the big pro debut of Clint Frazier and more.
With the Single-A All Star break behind us and the start of short season leagues now in full swing, it is a good time to take stock in how several Indians prospects are either raising or lowering their prospect value halfway through the 2013 season. Today, Tony takes a look at some of those showings at the Triple-A Columbus and Double-A Akron levels, including the likes of Cord Phelps, T.J. House, Trevor Bauer, Scott Barnes, Jake Lowery, Matt Packer, Ronny Rodriguez, Carlos Moncrief and others.
The Indians have done their major lifting with signing picks from the draft as they have signed all of their picks through the ninth round and have signed 21 of the 39 players they selected in the draft. But they are still busy trying to sign a few more players, and today we provide an update on one new signing.
Smoke Signals is back on the cyberwaves tonight from 10:00pm – 11:00pm EST. Tonight, Tony and Jim will talk about the streaky Indians and if they can maintain their good play over the past two weeks so they can stay in the division and wildcard race. They will also talk about the All Star possibilities with the likes of Justin Masterson, Jason Kipnis, Carlos Santana and others, look at areas in need of improvement, ponder whether the Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn signings were worth it, and much more.
In today’s special edition of Minor Happenings, Tony provides a ton of updates and comments from the Indians front office on the likes of Shawn Morimando, Eric Haase, Cody Penny, Louis Head, Caleb Hamrick, Luis Lugo and others, finds out what Clint Frazier is up to and when he will make his pro debut, provides a ton of injury updates on the likes of Alex Monsalve, LeVon Washington, Elvis Araujo, Shawn Armstrong and the whereabouts of Dillon Howard, and takes a look at the recent good play of Bryce Stowell and Yhoxian Median.
The Indians this season have been extremely streaky and been a rollercoaster ride all season, and Tony says they remind him of another Indians team from the past 10 years. He also touches on the emergence of Corey Kluber, some poor decision making by one of their draft picks, runs down several injury updates, and more.
We are now officially down to three weeks away from the July 12th signing deadline, and the Indians have 16 players officially signed with a few more coming before the deadline. It is shaping up to be a busy weekend for the Indians as several draft picks are expected to officially sign. At least three players are expected to sign on Friday or sometime this weekend, including some big names. But one high profile player has decided not to sign, which comes as a big surprise. Tony has the details...
Yesterday, Tony posted part one of his post-draft Q&A with Indians Director of Scouting John Mirabelli. Today, in part two, Mirabelli goes into depth about their preparation for the draft, the philosophy of the draft, how they manage their bonus pool money, the decision-making process that goes into the first round pick (and other picks), the negotiation process, and much more. This is a very detailed and insightful Q&A on the pre and post draft process.
The signings have slowed down and the news has all but disappeared this week as remaining unsigned players either stand strong on their commitments to going to or going back to college while others are weighing their options. We are still 23 days away from the July 12th signing deadline and the Indians have only signed 14 players, so roughly 8-12 more players will be signed between now and then. Tony gives an update on a few that could be next as a few high profile signings should come soon, and one is in town as we speak.
