2012 Indians 7th round pick: OF Josh Schubert

Josh Schubert
Josh Schubert
June 5, 2012

With their 7th round pick in the 2012 MLB Draft the Cleveland Indians selected outfielder Josh Schubert out of Calhoun High School (GA).

Born: 1/25/1994 – Height: 6’4” – Weight: 210 – Bats: Right – Throws: Right

Ranks:

Perfect Game: 257th
Baseball America: 151st

Tony's quick take: Another interesting pick by the Indians and now their fourth pick out of six picks on the second day of the draft on a prep player. He is listed with the last name of McAdams by MLB, but he is in the process of having his last name changed to Schubert and is already going by that name. He has impressive size at 6’4” and 215 pounds coming out of high school, and has some big power. His future is as a corner outfielder, maybe left field, and the power is certainly very intriguing, especially from the right side. There are some concerns with his hit tool and if he will be consistent enough to showcase that raw power as a professional, but you have to like toolsy and athletic players with upside at this point. Another interesting pickup for the Indians.

Jeff Ellis: Josh Mcadams, who is changing his name to Josh Schubert, is a big right handed outfielder and looks like what you want a right fielder to look like.  He has a great arm and some definite power potential in his frame, and is viewed as a risk/reward player. His plus power is on display in batting practice, but the question is about his ability to hit.  He needs some work at the plate to refine himself as a hitter, but the power is there and it is what excites teams.  He has signed late to play at High Point and is considered very signable.  As a bonus his profile is exactly what this system lacks in terms of depth.  He is the second right handed risk/reward outfielder the Indians have gambled on today.

Press release: Batted .447 with six home runs, nine doubles and three triples to his team to a Region 7-AA title and a third-round state playoff appearance…Went 6-1 with a 2.68 ERA in his time on the mound…Signed to play baseball at High Point University (NC).

BA says Schubert has one of the draft's best throwing arms, so probably a RF.

Also says he is 17, not 18.
