With their 2nd round pick in the 2012 MLB Draft the Cleveland Indians select right-handed pitcher Mitchell Brown out of Rochester Century High School (MN).
Born: 4/13/1994 – Height: 6’1” – Weight: 195 – Bats: Right – Throws: Right
Ranks:
John Sickels: 30th
Jonathan Mayo: 51st
Perfect Game: 59th
Baseball America: 44th
Keith Law: 45th
Tony's quick take: Brown is a great pick here considering he was a Top 50 guy for most pundits, which is like getting a first round supplemental round pick halfway through the second round. I noted yesterday the Indians may have gome safer with an underslot guy in the first round so they could be more aggressive on picks that fall on Day 2, and one pick in, that prediction is looking more plausible. This kid can throw the ball, had an interesting mix of pitches, and tons of projection and upside. Hard to find anything to argue with on this pick by Grant and his crew.
Jeff Ellis: Mitchell Brown being a cold weather arm has been overlooked until late when people really started to realize this kid was something special. He sits in 90-94, but I think could end up throwing 93-96, working on a high 80's cut fastball. He also throws a high 70's curve, low 80's slider, and a change that needs some work. He has five legit pitches and he will drop some as he moves, but it still gives him a ton of options. The cut fastball and slider both project as plus, and the change should be average. He has a frame scouts love, and really shows no fear and will throw any pitch at any time. As a fun bonus he is the son of a Korean power lifter, which has more than likely helped with his frame. I like this pick a lot as there is lots of projection, a good frame, and really a guy who could surprise since cold weather arms just don't get as many looks.
Press release: Prep pitcher from the state of Minnesota, went 6-1 w/a 0.65 ERA in 7 starts this spring for Rochester Century High School near Minneapolis (43.0IP, 13H, 3ER, 12BB, 89K). Committed to pitch for the University of San Diego. Was a 3rd team High School all-America selection by Rawlings.
