2012 Indians 29th round pick: LHP Randall Fant

In the 29th round of the 2012 MLB Draft the Cleveland Indians have selected left-handed pitcher Randall Fant out of the University of Arkansas.

Quick take: Fant was originally drafted out of high school by the Red Sox in the 21st round of the 2009 Draft. He throws a three pitch mix of a fastball, curveball and changeup and has shown he can throw all three for strikes. Over his three year college career he has appeared in 43 games, starting 33 of them, and is 8-9 with a 3.81 ERA. In 151.1 innings he has allowed 149 hits, 33 walks, and has 94 strikeouts. This year he showed improved command and a better strikeout rate.
Jeff Ellis: The Indians continue their recent love affair with Arkansas. I am sure Razorback fans are starting to dislike the Indians who seem to be on a mission to sign talent away from that program. Randall Fant had a rough year losing his spot in the rotation for the majority of the year. Yet he gained it back for the last third of the season which is the most important time of the year for any draft prospect. He throws in the low 90's/upper 80's and his slider projects as average. His changeup needs some work still. He has the size teams look for in pitchers, and could have a future in the pen. He might be signable because of the rough year.
