2012 Indians 21st round pick: 2B Joe Sever

June 6, 2012

In the 21st round of the 2012 MLB Draft the Cleveland Indians have selected second baseman Joe Sever out of Pepperdine University (CA).

Date of birth: 8/12/1990 - Height: 6’0” - Weight: 205 - Bats: Right - Throws: Right

Quick take: Sever is a college junior, so he could go back into the draft, but then he would lose a lot of leverage as a senior next year. He has a good, solid frame and shows good actions in the field with his hands and a quick release. He can also hit as he has some very good bat speed. His makeup is good and he is an excellent student.

Jeff Ellis: Joe Sever is a second baseman who might have a few people in Cleveland that will have a hard time looking past the fact that his uncle is John Elway.  He struggled with the new bats last year, but really rebounded this season with his average jumping 100 points and cutting his strikeout total in half over previous years, while also almost doubling his walk total. This shows that Sever legitimately changed his approach at the dish, and that his improvement is genuine. He is another player who fits this draft's theme, in that he is more of an intangible guy than a super athlete.  I for one am intrigued by what his numbers showed me, and I think he would be a very interesting second basemen for the Indians. Teams passed on him because he might not have any plus skills, but as long as he keeps working I think he can make those regret passing on him.
