The Indians completed the 2013 First-Year Player Draft on Saturday night with a group of 39 new faces. It was an ugly week for the Lake County Captains as they went winless since last Wednesday. The team dropped seven games and was rained out one evening, dropping their record to a league-worst 20-41. The offense continues to be problematic for the team and the starting pitching remains a nightly question mark. With the All-Star break approaching, perhaps a few days rest will be beneficial. Join Stephanie Metzger as she recaps the week in On-Deck with the Captains.
Another day, another update on the signing status of several of the Indians draft picks. In today's update Tony gives an update on Clint Frazier and has the day he will sign, discusses a few new players who are expected to sign, talks about some high leverage players that will decline to sign and go to or back to school, and more.
At long last, the Indians' eight-game losing streak is finally over. Some timely hits and an outstanding performance by right-hander led to the Tribe's 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers, and it now appears as if the Kluber could indeed be proving that he's here to stay. With the streak behind them, the Indians can now move forward but not before the IBI's Jake Dungan takes a look back at last night's contest and offers his Second Thoughts.
In today's "War and Peace" edition of Around the Farm, the IBI's Arthur Kinney chimes in on several good and bad performances on the night from around the Indians farm system. Diasuke Matsuzaka made his return to the mound but it was cut short because of injury, Lonnie Chisenhall continues to rake, Ronny Rod continues to hit in Akron, and more.
The Indians have been looking for a stopper as of late, and on Tuesday they found exactly just that in right-hander Corey Kluber. Kluber pitched brilliantly to lead the Indians to a 5-2 win, which also happened to stop an eight-game losing streak. Join the IBI's Stephanie Metzger as she provides all the play-by-play from what ended up being a critical Indians win.
We have a few different post-draft articles coming to the IBI over the next few days. In addition to the signing updates, we will also have our detailed site recap of the draft as well as a post-draft Q&A with John Mirabelli. In total, 13 players are reviewed by scouts outside of the organization.
With nine wins over the past two weeks, the Akron Aeros have almost climbed back over .500 for the first time since May 10. The recent hot streak moved the Aeros to only four games back of first place. The team has been a lot of fun to watch and is filled with players to keep an eye on. To read about who these players are, which toolsy outfielder was out of his mind over the past week, and everything else you need to know about the team, join Jim Piascik and go Launching off with the Aeros.
Tony checked in yesterday with his first signing update with news, notes and firsthand information on 14 of the Indians 39 draft picks. Today, he continues his signing updates with more news on Clint Frazier, some additional players that have agreed to terms on deals, a few players who have decided not to sign (one who is a pretty big name), and more.
The Indians got a little bit of what they had been looking for on Monday as Scott Kazmir pitched well and Carlos Santana delivered a key, three-RBI base hit. However, the strong pitching and clutch hit were not nearly enough as a three-run seventh inning by the Texas Rangers doomed the Tribe and brought their losing streak to eight games. Join the IBI's Kevin Dean as he offers his Second Thoughts on the latest Indians loss.
The Crushers managed another .500 week after dropping their first two games in Traverse City. From the sixth through the eighth they recorded a season high win streak of three, counting their final game in Traverse City and their first two in Washington. They are now 9-12, still in last place in the East Division. Kyle Ferrara details that week that was for the Crushers...
Only one affiliate played on Monday night, with the rest of the Indians' minor league teams either off or postponed due to rain. There was still plenty of interesting developments. A home run streak continued for a guy that came into the season with questionable home run power. A 2012 ATF regular re-emerged on Monday as well. Join Jim Pete for a short-version of ATF...
It seems that Trevor Bauer has found a fit with the Cleveland Indians organization. Bauer has things he is working on before he can make the major leagues his permanent home, but between his intelligence and passion for the game there’s no doubt that is where he belongs. Bauer and pitching coordinator Ruben Niebla talk about his season to date.
