We continue with our 2013 prospect coverage here at the IBI with a look at the right-handed relievers in the Indians system. The Indians are overloaded with right-handed relief prospects and it is arguably the one position they are deepest at in the entire system. At the moment they have a Major League bullpen bursting at the seams with right-handed relievers, and that is the same thing for Triple-A Columbus and Double-A Akron. Tony looks at what right-handed relief options are available to the Indians in the future and breaks down the future and potential for the likes of Cody Allen, Shawn Armstrong, Rob Bryson, Preston Guilmet, Bryce Stowell, Grant Sides, Cody Penny and many others.
A number of Indians players had strong performances in the winter leagues on Friday. Asdrubal Cabrera and Andrew Campbell each had multi-hit performances while Rob Bryson continued to shut down the opposition. Plus, Jesus Aguilar and Jose Ramirez continued to build upon their strong winter seasons. The IBI's Steve Orbanek recaps all of the night's action as he takes your Around the Farm.
Currently, Major League Baseball is the only major professional sport without a salary cap. For years this has hurt small market clubs in their pursuit of quality players, and the big market clubs with the luxury of huge revenue streams could simply outspend small market teams. It was the classic example of the haves and have-nots. But new IBI contributor Will Joyce says that while more work needs to be done, that things are slowly changing and the new CBA that was adopted last year may be helping smaller revenue teams.
The playoffs continue in the Venezuelan, Dominican and Puerto Rican Winter Leagues, and a few Indians players have upped their game as they push forward for a chance at a league championship. In particular, Jesus Aguilar launched three home runs this past week, and Asdrubal Cabrera continues to impress at the plate. The IBI's Steve Orbanek recaps all the action and provides all of the winter statistics in this week's edition of the Winter Ball Notebook.
It was a fairly uneventful night in the winter leagues last night, though plenty of newcomers to Cleveland made appearances. Quincy Latimore, Jerry Gil, and Edward Paredes were all in action last night and they had varying levels of success. To find out who did well and who didn't, along with tracking the other Cleveland players in action last night, join Jim Piascik as he takes you Around The Farm.
Just one year ago, Austin Adams was one of the most talked about prospects in the Indians farm system. The hard-throwing right-hander had just completed a brilliant 2011 campaign, and he seemed poised for another... until injuries hit. Now, it's hard to say what lies ahead for Adams, but he's certainly not the prospect he was a year ago. What exactly is in store for Adams? The IBI's Steve Orbanek opines when he looks at Adams' career in this week's edition of Then & Now.
You may have noticed that the 2013 Hall of Fame results were released yesterday. If you realized that, you may have also realized that no players were elected this year, despite the presence of many deserving candidates on the ballot. The outrage has filled the internet over the last 24 hours, with plenty of people getting worked up over the results. Jim Piascik decided to join the fun, arguing that among plenty of unappealing options, voting no one in was the worst possible choice.
Jesus Aguilar's early winter struggles seem to be a thing of the past, and the hulking first baseman provided further evidence for that argument on Wednesday when he recorded a home run in his third straight game. Aguilar was not the only member of Leones del Caracas to impress on the evening though as Asdrubal Cabrera had a great night at the plate and collected three hits. The IBI's Steve Orbanek recaps all of the night's action as he takes you Around the Farm.
The Indians completed a trade today sending right-handed pitcher Jeanmar Gomez to the Pirates in exchange for outfielder Quincy Latimore. Gomez had been designated for assignment last Wednesday to make room on the roster for newly acquired free agent pitcher Brett Myers.
The BWAA announced the 2013 Baseball Hall of Fame class on Wednesday, and for just the eighth time in the history of the voting and first time since 1996 no one was voted into Cooperstown. Former Indians fan favorites Sandy Alomar Jr. and Kenny Lofton were on the ballot for the first time, and the news was fatal for both.
The Indians have addressed many of their needs this offseason, but are far from being a complete, competitive team. While "making a splash" with a big signing isn't likely, the Indians certainly are keeping the fans on their toes with their hot stove league movement. Join Jim Pete as he looks at potential signing of several seemingly unatainable free agents and trade options.
Jose Ramirez's strong winter season continued on Tuesday as the switch-hitting second baseman socked his first home run in the Dominican Winter League. Also, Ezequiel Carrera put together a solid performance in the Venezuelan Winter League and Roberto Perez was in action in the Puerto Rican Winter League. The IBI's Steve Orbanek recaps all of the night's action as he takes you Around the Farm.
Today the Indians announced that they have officially signed free agent left-handed pitcher Scott Kazmir, right-handed pitcher Jerry Gil, and left-handed pitcher Edward Paredes to minor league contracts with non-roster invitations to Major League camp this spring. Tony quickly reviews each signing...
We continue with our 2013 prospect coverage here at the IBI with a look at the left-handed starters in the Indians system. The Indians have not had a suitable left-handed starting pitching option in their rotation since they traded Cliff Lee in July of 2009, and that is still the case as the Indians will likely go into the 2013 season with an all right-handed starting rotation. Tony looks at what left-handed starting options are available to the Indians in the future and breaks down the future and potential for the likes of Elvis Araujo, T.J. House, Luis Lugo, Ryan Merritt, Shawn Morimando, Matt Packer, Mike Rayl, Giovanni Soto, and several others.
The winter league playoffs continued in Venezuela and Puerto Rico last night, and Tony shares the details of how the Indians players did in both leagues. Outfielder Ezequiel Carrera continues to have a nice offseason, first baseman Jesus Aguilar is in a power groove, and more...
